Interesting article.
I agree that discerning intelligence versus the ability to please a master is very difficult.

I have two dogs; a Heinz-57 German Sherpherd/Chow mix and an apparent Border Collie/Terrier mix.

Both are very intelligent.

The Border is much more energetic, attentive and responds quickly to verbal commands. However, the chow mix, is more aloof, dignified, and "reads" it's owner's eyes and tone extremely well and learns what to do with little effort.

Both have a strong prey/chase instinct but are great with human children and adults.

A short story to illustrate.

On the back patio, both dogs were shown a treat, which was then placed in a metal coffee can. The can was inverted and placed on the patio. Both dogs were given the command "get it". Both dogs approached the can, sniffed, then walked away.

The test was repeated. The result was the same.

The third time, no verbal command was given. Instead, the owner simply gazed at each dog, then at the can. After three gazes, the Chow "got it", approached the can, nudging it enough to reveal the treat hidden underneath.

The Border did not seem to understand at all.

Since then, both have "learned" what to do and will find the treat without fail.

Now thats smart!
